Keep skills tests tiny
Employment New Zealand says asking a barista to make two or three coffees is acceptable, but a whole shift, or even a few hours, would likely be employment.

Sign before day one
A 90-day trial period only works if it’s in an employment agreement signed before the person starts work, and they haven’t worked for you before.

Safety checks first
In early learning, the Children’s Act 2014 safety check, including a Police vet, must be completed before a children’s worker starts.
